GC-4175 (ZRJ-1) Coal Spontaneous Combustion Detector is a gas chromatography used for detecting spontaneous combustion of coal inside the mine. Spontaneous combustion can be identified by determining the oxygen content within the coal bed. Coal at low temperatures and at atmospheric temperature absorb some of oxygen in the air. Based on the Langmuir adsorption equation, a two gas path gas chromatography can determine the adsorption rate and the flow of oxygen. Under certain conditions, the oxygen adsorption rate of coal can be used to predict the chance of future spontaneous combustion.

The oxidation properties of coal is one of the important factors in causing coal spontaneous combustion. Different coal mines have different rates of spontanous combusition occuring, and specific safety regulations require standards to be met. Extending and opening coal mine also requires identifying the oxygen content of coal for safety. Determining the oxygen content in coal to predict spontaneous combustion using a gas chromatography is the product of joint cooperation between public and private sectors. With the former Ministry of Coal of China, East & West Inc. developed GC-4175 to ensure the safety of coal miners and mines in the nation.
